Monsoon is the toughest season for elevators. In Thane, June to September brings the highest number of breakdowns, and in most cases it comes down to three things: water ingress, humidity, and power fluctuations.
Water is the biggest enemy. Even 20-30 cm of water in the lift pit can damage controllers, ropes, and buffers. Housing societies should seal lift lobbies, ensure proper thresholds and canopies at entrances, and check that drainage around the building is working. Inside the machine room, humidity and voltage spikes cause PCB failures. Installing dehumidifiers, checking earthing, and using voltage stabilizers helps. A scheduled infrared thermography test can also detect moisture in panels before it becomes a problem.
Routine safety matters just as much. Test door sensors, interlocks, and emergency alarms every week. Keep the machine room locked, clean, and free of storage. Security should ensure residents don’t enter with wet umbrellas or dripping footwear.
Finally, don’t skip your AMC. Get a pre-monsoon audit from your elevator contractor and run entrapment drills with residents.
An elevator is a building’s lifeline. A little monsoon preparedness now prevents costly repairs later — and keeps everyone safe.
